MG: Deane qualifies for PGA Championship in playoff

June 21, 2017

SUNRIVER, Ore. -- Stuart Deane appeared loose and care-free as he birdied the second playoff hole to earn one of two available qualification spots into the field of the PGA Championships Tuesday at Sunriver Resort.

UTA's director of golf entered the PGA Professional Championship's final round in a tie for 53rd place but fired a 1-under par 71 to finish the 72-hole event at 3-over par 290 and tied with seven other golfers for 19th place.

The event's top 20 finishers qualified for the PGA Championships, so a playoff between the eight golfers tied for the final spot was necessary. One golfer was eliminated on the first playoff hole before Deane and David Muttitt were the only golfers to register birdie on the second hole to claim the honors.

Deane, who won the Prize Possessions Eastern Championship last week and narrowly missed the cut at the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson, qualified for his second PGA Championship and will be playing in his 12th career PGA Tour event.

After opening his final round with a birdie, Deane made par on each of the next eight holes to sit at 1-under for the day at the turn. Things turned south for a bit as he made bogey on two of the first three holes of the back nine.

Deane turned things around with birdies on nos. 15 and 17 to finish the round at 1-under par and sat at 3-over for the tournament.

When he finished, Deane was about six spots outside of the top 20, but as players finished later in the day he moved into a playoff for the final qualifying spot.

In addition to Deane, UTA will be represented at the PGA Championships by Burleson's Hidden Valley Golf Course club professional and former Maverick golfer Greg Gregory. He finished in a tie for ninth place at the PGA Professional Championship with a 1-over par 288.

The 99th PGA Championship is scheduled for Aug. 10-13, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
