ARLINGTON, Texas -- A highly entertaining non-league schedule that includes contests against programs from 11 different conferences awaits the defending Sun Belt Conference champion UTA men's basketball team this season.
The Mavericks, which enter the season labeled by most experts as one of the top mid-major programs in the country, will play 13 non-league games. The schedule features five teams coming off postseason appearances and four that were among the top 100 in the country last season, according to the NCAA's ratings percentage index (RPI).
"I think we have a very competitive schedule that will prepare our team for conference play and gives us a chance to qualify for the postseason," said UTA head coach Scott Cross, the winningest coach in program history. "Our fans and players will appreciate that we have some very good home games against quality opponents. Playing in College Park Center gives us a significant home court advantage, especially with the enthusiasm we experienced in last year's NIT run.
"A primary objective with scheduling is to prepare your team to have success in league play. With our attractive home schedule, combined with several road games in tough environments, I think our players will be exposed to just about anything they will see in the Sun Belt."
Season tickets are scheduled to go on sale in mid-July.
UTA opens the season at home on Saturday, Nov. 11 in a homecoming weekend contest against Loyola Marymount in College Park Center. The game will be the showcase event for the University's annual homecoming activities, which include a Sun Belt volleyball match on Nov. 10 against ULM and a Lady Mavs women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.
A highly-anticipated rematch at BYU on Saturday, Nov. 18 will serve as the first of four straight road games in eight days. The Mavericks will also travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the University of Alabama on Nov. 21 and to Buffalo, N.Y. to play Western Carolina and either host Niagara or Alabama A&M on Nov. 24 and 25.
The Mavericks claimed a thrilling 105-89 win over the Cougars in the first round of the NIT last season in front of a national ESPN2 television audience. BYU, one of only two teams to defeat national finalist Gonzaga, returns most of its squad that led the Cougars to a 22-12 overall record and third place finish in the WCC.
UTA returns home for 3-straight games in College Park Center with a Nov. 27 game against UT Dallas before hosting in-state Conference USA rivals Rice on Dec. 29 and North Texas on Dec. 2.
The rest of the month of December features four non-conference games against teams that have made headlines in postseason play in recent seasons and a road contest at an in-state UT system rival.
The Mavericks travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face a formidable Northern Iowa program on Dec. 7. The Panthers ranked as high as 10th nationally and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and knocked off Texas before losing in double-overtime to Texas A&M in the 2016.
Two days later, UTA welcomes Florida Gulf Coast University for a Dec. 9 contest in College Park Center. Nicknamed Dunk City, FGCU has qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times in the last five seasons and advanced to the regional semifinals in 2015.
UTA plays three games in six days in mid-December, starting with a Dec. 16 game at UTRGV. Two days later, the Mavericks travel to Omaha, Neb. to face Creighton. The Bluejays ranked as high as seventh in the Associated Press national poll last season and has played in the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons and 11 times since 1999.
Prior to the Sun Belt Conference opener at the end of the month, the Mavericks conclude their non-conference schedule on Dec. 21 against Cal Poly. The Mustangs earned national attention in 2014 when they claimed the Big West Conference Tournament title then advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
