Mavs Claim UTSA Cup On Sunday

SAN ANTONIO - UT Arlington men's tennis picked up momentum heading into the ITA Texas Regionals as it swept its way through the UTSA Cup, topping the host in the finale on Sunday afternoon. 

"I am really proud of our performance after we've been off the court for a few weeks now," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "This is always a test for us when we can play against some of our in-state rivals and we came through with a well-played weekend to earn the title."

The Mavericks opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Incarnate Word in the opening round on Friday. Enrique Pardo and Mauricio Del Rio each claimed singles wins with 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 and 6-1, 7-5 respectively. Pardo and Del Rio claimed their doubles match with a 6-2 win, while Eduardo Simo and Jakub Grzegorczyk won 6-4. 

On Saturday, the Mavericks won all six matches in a meeting with a combined squad of Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word. Pardo and Del Rio won 6-4, Simo and Grzegorczyk winning 6-2. In singles, all four Mavs won with only Pardo going into a tiebreak. 

Del Rio battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win in singles to help lead the charger after the Mavs dropped both doubles matches against the Roadrunners. Simo clinched his 6-4, 3-6, 12-10, while Grzegorczyk won is straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
