WACO - A run into the quarterfinals for
Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio highlighted UT Arlington's stay in the ITA Texas Regional hosted by Baylor.
The tandem, ranked No. 33 in the ITA/Oracle Preseason Collegiate Rankings, picked up a pair of wins before being eliminated in a hard-fought quarterfinal, while several UTA players navigated their way through both the main draw and consolation draw in singles.
"We had a good showing this weekend at the regionals and I am very proud of our team for the way they have competed," UTA coach
Diego Benitez said. "This is always a tough competition and we handled it decently well. After a tough fall tournament schedule, we are excited about what the spring may bring the Mavericks as we look to compete for a Sun Belt championship once again."
Nuez and Del Rio, seeded fourth in the doubles draw, knocked out a squad from Abilene Christian in the second round with an 8-2 win, the third-round matchup was a bit tougher with a 8-6 win over Rice's squad. Nuez and Del Rio fell 8-6 in the quarterfinals to the No. 5 seed from Texas Tech.
In singles play, Nuez advanced into the Round of 32 as the draw's No. 8 seed. Nuez had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Joao Ceolin from UTSA before being topped in a three-set matchup against Artem Kapshuk of Texas Tech.
Edward Simo earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over UTRGV's George Hutching's before falling to the draw's top seed from Texas in the Round of 32. Del Rio earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mateo Schmit, but went out in three sets against TCU's Reese Stalder in the second round. Stalder was the draw's No. 11 seed.
In the consolation draw, Sanshidh Kommaruju won in three sets to top Jackson Fine from ACU, won 6-1, 6-0 against Michael Loyd from UTRGV, but fell to UTSA's Kai Breitbach from UTSA.
Enrique Pardo advanced into the Round of 16 of the consolation with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Lamar, but went out in three sets to Eric Rutledge.
