MBB: Mavs fall to Warhawks despite Neal's offensive show

Box Score Feb. 15, 2018

Final Stats | Notes

MONROE, La. -- UT Arlington senior Erick Neal put on an offensive show, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks dropped an 84-71 decision to host ULM in a Sun Belt Conference game Thursday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Dallas native scored 35 points on 13-of-19 from the field and equaled a program record with 9 3-pointers, but the hosts answered every threat to claim their fifth victory in their last six games. UTA fell to 16-11 on the season and 7-7 in the Sun Belt, while ULM evened its record to 12-12 and moved to 6-7 in league play.

The Mavericks return to action Saturday at league-leading Louisiana. The 7 p.m. tipoff will be streamed live on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. Matt Stewart and Bob Donewald are scheduled to call the action with Whitney Haworth handling sideline duties.

Statistically, the game was relatively even. The Warhawks earned a narrow 37-35 rebounding advantage and neither team suffered a high number of turnovers, UTA registered 11 and ULM only had 10. ULM had four players in double figures in scoring - led by Michael Ertel's 20.

UTA shot 42 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the 3-point arc. But, other than Neal's impressive shooting, the rest of the Mavericks shot just 32 percent from the field and went 3-of-16 from long range.

Neal's nine 3-pointers equaled the program record set by Willie Brand against Northwestern State on Feb. 14, 1991. He also surpassed Paul Renfro to move into fifth on the program's all-time career scoring list.
