WACO, Texas – The men's and women's cross country teams lifted the lid on the 2018 season on a sweltering Friday evening at the Bear Twilight Invitational. The Mavericks finished sixth on the men's side and seventh in the women's standings.

The top result for the men came from Cole Klashinsky, who nabbed ninth place with a time of 18:47.6 over the 6k layout.

Grayson Birka was the next Maverick across the line with a time of 19:05.5 to place 19th. UTA's other point scorers were Connor Butterfield (35th, 19:35.3), Eliseo Rodriguez (37th, 19:45.4) and Victor Bocanegra (42nd, 20:00.8).

For the women, Valeria Diaz was the top finisher in her first UTA meet. She covered the 4k race in a time of 15:08.5 to place 30th.

Two Mavs, Bailey Balmer (15:45.4) and Macey Beazley (15:45.7), crossed side-by-side in 45th and 46th positions. Briana Creeks (55th) and Chantal Van der Westhuizen (56th) rounded out the team's scoring positions.

With the team still in its training stages, not all members of the team traveled to the meet. The Mavericks return to action next Friday (Sept. 7) morning when the teams host the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
