In the singles draw,
Angel Diaz made an impressive run to the quarterfinals, taking down a handful of Power Five foes along the way. After winning his first match 6-1, 6-4, Diaz was pitted against the No. 6 seed in the tournament and No. 39 national ranked Parker Wynn (Texas Tech). Diaz handled Wynn in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. He advanced to play Guido Marson (Texas A&M). Diaz once again came on top 6-4, 6-2. After fighting his way to the quarterfinals, Diaz fell in a tough 6-3, 7-5 battle to Austin Abbrat (Texas A&M) to end his run.
Â
Miguel Cabrera also came out on top against a nationally ranked foe early in the tournament. After defeating Brock Lauer (Lamar) 6-3, 6-0, Cabrera faced off against the No. 2 seed in the tournament and No. 14 nationally ranked Matias Soto (Baylor). Cabrera gutted out a 7-5, 7-6(3) win over Soto. Cabrera would fall in the next round to SMU's Ethan Leon 6-2, 7-5.
Â
After losing his initial match, Hayen regained himself and won four matches in the consolation bracket, including a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eshan Talluri (Texas) to push him to the quarterfinals. A walkover win over Tomas Vaise (SMU) pushed Hayen to the semifinals, but Thomas Rodrigues (Corpus Christi) proved to be too much on the final day of the tournament, defeating Hayen 6-3, 6-4.
Â
With Diaz advancing to the quarterfinals, he now has a chance to become an At-Large selection for the ITA National Fall Championships held in Newport Beach, California from November 6 through 10.
Â
The Mavericks still have one more tournament to play this fall – the Ralston/Nuefeld Coaches Challenge hosted by SMU. The Challenge will take place over three days, beginning November 1.
