ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Claire Chastain scored a career-high 22 points, as the UTA women's basketball team's comeback bid fell short in a 76-67 loss to No. 8/9 Louisville on Day 1 of the 2019 Paradise Jam on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 28) at the University of the Virgin Islands' Sports and Fitness Center.
With the loss, the Lady Mavericks fall to 4-1 on the year, while the Cardinals improve to 6-0. Both squads shot the ball well from the floor (UTA – 45.5%; Louisville – 47.3%) and U of L barely won the rebound battle 34-31. The Lady Mavs forced the Cardinals into 20 turnovers, which marked the fifth straight opponent that UTA has forced into 14+ turnovers this season.
Chastain shot 8-of-15 from the field, 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to finish with her career-best and team-high 22 points. The sophomore also added two boards, a block and a steal in the win.
Marie Benson chipped in with 16 points, eight boards, three steals and an assist, while
Katie Ferrell added nine points, three boards and a pair of dimes.
Terryn Milton registered eight points, three rebounds and a team-high four assists.
The Lady Mavs came out swinging and shot 57.1 percent from the field in the opening quarter and took a slim 21-20 lead after 10 minutes of action. UTA continued to shoot the ball well, but 13 first half turnovers hurt them and Louisville took a 43-36 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Louisville pulled ahead 70-54 on a 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining, but the Lady Mavs didn't fold and used a 13-2 run, capped by a layup from
Katie Mayhue with 1:33 left, to pull within five points, 72-67. That would be as close as UTA would get before falling by the final score.
UTA will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 29) when they take on No. 1 Oregon on Day 2 of the Paradise Jam. Tip-off is set for 2:15 p.m. CT.
