ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams return to action this week at the UTA Tennis Center with a quintet of matches – three for the women and two for the men.
Both the men and women will take on Dallas Baptist and Cameron University Thursday – the DBU match for both teams gets underway at 10 a.m., while the Cameron contest is scheduled to commence at 2 p.m. Following action on Thursday, the men will be off until next Friday, but the women return to the UTA Tennis Center courts on Sunday for a dual at 10 a.m. with UTRGV. All UTA tennis matches are free to the public.
The women (5-1) had their five-match unbeaten start to the spring season halted on Sunday when Wichita State defeated the Mavericks, 5-1, in a match which was moved indoors to Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth. The men, meanwhile, had their match with the Shockers on Saturday postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Apr. 8.
Thursday's matches will represent the first for the men since Feb. 2 when they took on TCU – one of two nationally-ranked top-20 teams the Mavs (2-3) have already faced this spring.
Enrique Pardo paces the men with 10 singles victories on the year, and is 3-1 playing out of #2 singles so far this spring. In doubles action, Pardo is 3-0 when teamed with
Mauricio Rio and also 3-0 when paired with
Eduard Simo. For the year, Pardo boasts a 6-1 doubles record.
On the women's side,
Almudena Boza possesses a team-leading 14 singles victories bridging the fall and spring seasons. However,
Carla Pons might enter Thursday as the Mavs' hottest player, having won six of her last seven singles matches and five-straight doubles matches.
Following action on Thursday, the men will return to the UTA Tennis Center next Friday, Feb. 22, for a 2 p.m. first serve with Lamar. The women – following Sunday's match with UTRGV – will be at Rice on Feb. 23 at 11 a.m.
