CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UTA baseball team picked up its first win of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-3, in game three of a four-game set at Chapman Field. The Mavs used some early offense to jump on the Islanders, scoring four total runs in the first and fourth frames, to grab a lead and never look back.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Islanders suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 2-1.

Zac Cook went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Boone Montgomery finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Conner Aube went 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Josh Minjarez launched his first homer of the season and finished the afternoon 1-for-3 at the plate.

Cade Winquest earned his first collegiate win, pitching 2.1 innings in relief. Winquest faced nine batters, surrendering 0 hits and ranking up a pair of K's.

UTA got things going in the first inning. Doubles from Aube and Cook generated a quick run for the Mavs, and a groundout RBI combined with an error plated two more to give UTA an early 3-0 advantage.

The Mavs added another run in the fourth inning after another double from Cook, followed by an eventual sacrifice fly that plated the fourth run of the day for UTA (4-0).

Leading 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Josh Minjarez homered to open the frame. A pair of errors from the pitcher and a sac fly scored both Montgomery and Aube, pushing the Mavericks lead back to four (7-3).

Trailing two games to one, the Mavs look to earn a split in the season-opening series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a win on Monday afternoon. First pitch for the fourth and final game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
