Renning’s Solo Homer In Extras Lifts Mavs Past Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – David Renning's solo homer in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the difference as the Mavericks defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 10-9, at Chapman Field on Monday afternoon.

Falling behind by five runs in the fifth inning, the Islanders battled back and plated one run in the sixth and five more in the seventh, to grab a one-run advantage (9-8). An Anthony Dominguez home run in the eighth frame knotted the score at 9-9, and Renning's homer in extra innings gave the Mavs the 10-9 win and a split of the season-opening series.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Islanders fall to 2-2 on the year.

Dominguez led the way for the Mavs, finishing the afternoon 3-for-5 at the dish, with a home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Connor Aube went 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles, his fourth and fifth of the season. Andrew Miller went 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Josh Minjarez and Renning each hit solo home runs and finished 2-for-6 and 1-for-5, respectively.

Toby Davis got the win after pitching an inning and giving up one hit, while Andrew Gross took the mound in the bottom of the 10th and fanned two batters to record the save and secure the win for UTA.

The Mavericks will open up their 2019 home schedule on Wednesday night (Feb. 20) when they play host to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
