Solid Pitching Secures Road Win for Mavs

ATLANTA, Ga. – Leading by a run after five innings, a trio of UTA relief pitchers shut Georgia State down in a 4-3 road win against Georgia State on Saturday.

UTA starter Ka'ikepono Anderson pitched five innings and picked up his fourth win of the season. Trevor Pruitt, Tristan Tom and Andrew Gross then came in to pitch a combined three innings of scoreless ball. The three combined for five strikeouts. Gross finished it off in the ninth to pick his ninth save of the season to give the Mavs (14-9, 3-2 SBC) the road win.

Will Olson went 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI in the win. Connor Aube batted in UTA's other run. Aube went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs.

Aube got the offense going right off the bat with a triple to open the game. In the very next at-bat, Olson drove Aube home with a single to centerfield.

The Mavs surrendered the lead in the bottom half of the first when Georgia State (7-16, 2-3) scored an unearned run on a pair of UTA fielding errors.

With the game still tied at one, Georgia State loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third. Anderson then struck out the next two batters before getting the final hitter to ground out to get out of the inning unscathed.

UTA took advantage in the top of the third as Aube and Olson batted in a run in consecutive at-bats to give the Mavs a 3-1 lead. Olson got his final RBI on a walk with the bases loaded in the next inning. David Renning scored on the walk.

Georgia State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but couldn't get the tying run across the plate.

The Mavs will go for the series sweep at noon Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

BARK IN THE PARK…ALL SEASON LONG
UT Arlington Department of Athletics officials announced that all 2019 home baseball games at Clay Gould Ballpark and softball games at Allan Saxe Field will be dog-friendly, thanks to a generous partnership with upstart Lone Star Friends of Animals to create 'Casey's Corner.'

Dogs which are leashed, at least six months old and with the proper vaccinations will be permitted at all UTA baseball and softball games throughout the season.
Casey's Corner is a grassy area between the baseball and softball fields, along the 3rd-base line of the baseball stadium. Multiple pet waste stations have been set up, and the space provides fans and dog owners an opportunity to walk and sit with their canine companions while taking in all the Maverick action.
