Mavs Move Into First Place With Strong Offensive Performance In Series Finale

ARLINGTON, Texas – For the first time in the series, South Alabama scored first, but the UTA baseball team still completed the sweep with a 11-5 win at home Sunday.

The win improves UTA's record to 19-10 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while South Alabama falls to 12-14 overall (3-6 SBC). The win also moved the Mavs into a tie for first place in the Sun Belt standings with Arkansas State.

Josh Minjarez led the offensive explosion with four RBI in the win. He also scored a run.

After a scoreless first inning, the offensive fireworks began in the third inning. A UTA fielding error put Ethan Wilson on first in the top of the third. Two batters later, he crossed the plate to give the Jags their only lead of the series.

It was short-lived, though, as the Anthony Dominguez, Zac Cook and Minjarez reached base on three consecutive at-bats. Each at-bat produced a run and gave UTA a 3-1 lead.

Boone Montgomery sparked a second consecutive three-run inning when he walked then stole second base. He eventually scored on a fielder's choice. Minjarez hit a single to center field to score two more runs and give the Mavs a 6-1 lead.

UTA added another run in the fifth inning singled Dylan Paul home to give the Mavs a six-run lead.

South Alabama answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Mavs kept the pressure on with yet another three-run inning in the bottom of the seventh inning. Andrew Miller started the rally with a UTA's second triple of the game.

David Moffatt picked up the win for the Mavs, going 5.2 innings with just one earned run.

UTA will take a break from conference travel to TCU at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BARK IN THE PARK…ALL SEASON LONG
UT Arlington Department of Athletics officials announced that all 2019 home baseball games at Clay Gould Ballpark and softball games at Allan Saxe Field will be dog-friendly, thanks to a generous partnership with upstart Lone Star Friends of Animals to create 'Casey's Corner.'

April 16th games (Softball vs. Texas, Baseball vs. TCU) no dogs will be allowed on that date only.

Dogs which are leashed, at least six months old and with the proper vaccinations will be permitted at all UTA baseball and softball games throughout the season.

Casey's Corner is a grassy area between the baseball and softball fields, along the 3rd-base line of the baseball stadium. Multiple pet waste stations have been set up, and the space provides fans and dog owners an opportunity to walk and sit with their canine companions while taking in all the Maverick action.
