ARLINGTON, Texas –
Erik Martinsson's school record in the men's 800 meters highlighted the UTA track teams' busy week at four meets across the country. The Mavericks had student-athletes competing in Texas, California and Oklahoma over the past three days.
Martinsson snapped a 30-year-old school mark in the event with a time of 1:47.81 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. It was .04 faster than Joseph Sainah's time in 1989. Martinsson finished fifth against the top field in the nation and now leads the Sun Belt in the event by 4 ½ seconds. His clocking ranks No. 7 in the NCAA West Region and 12th nationally.
At the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays down the road in Torrance, Calif.,
Justin Domangue (14:07.86) and
Michael Guerrero (14:08.35) posted the second- and third-fastest times in school history in the men's 5000 meters. The duo now ranks 1-2 in the Sun Belt this season.
Meanwhile, at the John Jacobs Invitational, in Norman, Okla.,
Isaiah McBride (10.45) edged teammate
Deontre Haynes (10.46) in a photo finish to claim the men's 100m title. Haynes also was the runner up in the 200 meters with a clocking of 21.26.
The women's and men's 4x100m relay teams each grabbed runner-up finishes in Oklahoma. Both were season-best times (the women finished in 45.59), and the men's clocking (40.10) is the fastest in the SBC in 2019.
Victor Fincher also collected another win in the 110m hurdles, running a 14.50 to take the top spot on the podium.
D'Undre Mitchell was the runner up in the men's 400m with a season-best clocking of 47.35, which is the No. 4 time in the Sun Belt this year.
For the women,
Vanessa Ugorji (54.87) placed first in the women's 400 meters, while teammate
Brianna McClure was second in 56.32.
Trishawna Crawford matched her season-best effort in the women's 100 meters, crossing the line in a time of 11.81 to earn a second-place finish.
In the pole vault, freshman
Abigail Kelly-Salo topped 12-7 ½ (3.85m), the No. 4 mark in school history. Her previous best clearance this year was 12-6.
Back at the Brian Clay,
Rhiley Fritz placed fourth in the women's javelin with a best throw of 151-11, just two feet shy of her school-record toss earlier this month.
UTA also was in action at the Carl Kight Invitational in Nacogdoches, Texas. UTA will complete its regular season schedule with a select group of athletes competing at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster on Saturday.
