BOONE, N.C. – No. 20 UTA dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader to Appalachian State at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. Entering this weekend, UTA had swept four of its first six conference opponents, and the Mavericks were on a nine-game winning streak before losing at No. 6 Texas A&M on Tuesday.
UTA was outhit by the Mountaineers 20-16 on the day. The Mavs also struggled a bit in the field, committing five total errors on the day, while App State committed just one error during the double dip.
In Game 1, the Mavericks jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the third inning, thanks to a pair of homers from
Will Olson and
Josh Minjarez, but App State outscored the Mavs 8-1 from that point forward.
Andrew Miller finished the contest 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored, while Olson and Minjarez finished 3-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.
Aaron Funk went 2-for-4 during Game 1.
In Game 2, the Mountaineers got a gem of a performance from starting pitcher Tyler Tuthill and shutout the Mavs 6-0. Tuthill pitched a complete game shutout with 8 K's for App State.
Anthony Dominguez, Miller and
Connor Aube, who returned to the starting lineup after a few weeks off due to an injury, were the lone Mavericks to register a hit.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The Mountaineers'
Brandon Boone (4-2, 3.29 ERA) and UTA's
David Moffat (4-2, 3.32 ERA) are the probable starters for the series finale.
