BOONE, N.C. – The No. 20 UTA baseball team dropped its fourth consecutive game and third straight to App State (8-4) on Sunday afternoon at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
With the loss, the Mavs fall to 28-17 (14-7 SBC) and drop out of first place in the Sun Belt West Division, while Appalachian State improves to 19-22 on the season and 11-9 in conference play.
Anthony Dominguez had a very productive day at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
Josh Minjarez went 2-for-3 at the dish, while
Will Olson finished 1-for-4 with a homer and a pair of RBI. In his second start since returning from injury,
Connor Aube went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The Mavs struck first in the top of the second when Aube singled up the middle, scoring Minjarez (1-0).
App State responded by scoring three in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a passed ball and a 2-run shot to right field (3-1).
UTA got within one run in the top of the fifth when Dominguez tripled to centerfield to score
Zac Cook (3-2).
The Mountaineers scored two in the 6th and three in the bottom of the 7th to grab a comfortable 8-2 lead.
In the top of the 8th Olson helped UTA cut into the deficit with his 2-run HR (8-4). Olson's homer proved to be all offense the Mavs could manufacture over the final two innings as App State went on to secure the win.
The Mavs will look to get back in the win column when they host Dallas Baptist (30-13) on Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
