UTA Blows Past Little Rock In Mercy-Rule Win

ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA's offense caught fire for 12 hits as the Mavs defeated Little Rock, 11-1, in the series finale to snap the Trojans' six-game winning streak Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

With the win the Mavericks improve to 20-13 overall (8-4 SBC) and remain in a tie for first place in the Sun Belt Conference West Division with Arkansas State, while the Trojans fall to 13-19 overall and 7-5 in league play.

David Moffat picked up his third win of the season, tossing 8.0 innings and giving up seven hits and one earned run, while racking up 5 Ks.

Jose Torres was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Mavericks struck first in the third game of the series, posting five runs in the bottom of the second frame to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

UTA pushed three more runs across the plate in the third inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Phillip Childs' sac fly scored Josh Minjarez and Zac Cook doubled down the right field line to score Aaron Funk and Boone Montgomery.

Ramon Padilla drove in the lone Little Rock run of the afternoon, singling up the middle to score Garrett Scott, who led off the top of the fourth inning with a single through the left side.

The Mavericks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Montgomery tripled and drove in Justin Marino and Andrew Miller (10-1). Montgomery was a factor again in the bottom of the eighth, drawing a bases loaded walk to score Will Olson (11-1) and end the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Mavs will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they welcome No. 22 Baylor to Clay Gould Ballbark for a mid-week non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
