Box Score MIDLAND, Texas – The UT Arlington Men's tennis team spent the weekend at the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland where each player who participated had the opportunity to play in two matches to get their seasons started.
The tournament, which began on Friday and ended on Sunday, saw the Mavs face off against a combined six different schools.
Angel Diaz and
Alejandro Hayen each took advantage of their first-round matchups to advance to the second round of the tournament. In his first career match, Diaz defeated Raul Dobai from New Mexico 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Hayen took down Dobai's teammate, Facundo Bermejo 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
After falling in the first round,
Eduard Simo and
Solano Caffarena looked to rebound in the consolation bracket but neither one was able to. Simo Fell to Nikolas Moceanu of Abilene Christian 6-3, 6-7, (4-10), while Caffarena fell to Taine Bernhard, also from ACU, 6-7, 4-6.
In doubles play, Diaz and Hayen teamed up to take on Felipe Acosta and Javier Ruiz of Utah State. Acosta and Ruiz got the best of the Mavs tandem, defeating them 8-2 in the opening round.
Caffarena and Simo faired better in their matchup, but the outcome was still the same, falling 8-5 to Tyler Junior College's Jaycer Lyeons and Jeff Guerreo.
The Mavs will have the next two weeks to prepare for the ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma which will occur from October 5 through October 13.
