MANHATTAN, Kan. – The UT Arlington women's golf team hit the links for its first competitive action of the season on Sunday with 36 holes as part of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills Golf Course.
The Mavericks carded rounds of 316 and 308 and sit in 8th place with a 624 total. Host Kansas State leads the 11-team event following rounds of 295 and 293 as the Wildcats' 588 total is two shots clear of North Texas entering Monday's final round.
Junior
Madigan Murray paced the Mavs with rounds of 76 and 73 to help her finish the day sitting in a tie for 13th place with a total score of 149. Murray recorded a total of seven birdies on Sunday, tied for the 3rd-most in the field of 62 golfers and nearly representing half of UTA's team total of 16 through 36 holes.
"I'm proud of the way Madigan played today," commented head coach
Catherine Matranga. "Even with a few tough holes she played really solid. She hit the ball well and had a lot of good looks at birdie which just didn't fall.
"Elena (Kim) had a steady 2nd round as well," Matranga continued. "Hopefully we can continue our progress into tomorrow's final round."
Elena Kim (153 total) isn't far behind Madigan as she currently resides in a tie for 23rd place after completing the 2nd round five shots better than her 1st, parring 14 of her last 18 holes to finish with a score of 74.
In addition to Murray and Kim, junior
Sydney Garber (161 total) carded rounds of 80 and 81, and classmate
Kate Tran (165 total) posted rounds of 81 and 84.
In her first-ever competitive action at the collegiate level, freshman
Kinsey Ray (162 total) signed for rounds of 82 and 80.
Murray and Garber shot even par on par-3 holes, and as a team the Mavericks shot extremely well on those, sitting at 3-over on the day and good for 3rd in the field.
