HARLINGEN, Texas – UT Arlington tennis players
Angel Diaz and
Miguel Cabrera saw their tournaments come to an end on Monday, both falling in the second round of the Qualifying Draw at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Future event.
Diaz and Cabrera both advanced out of the first round. Diaz breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Matthew Vos, while Cabrera toughed out a three-set win over Jared Thompkins 4-6, 6-0, [10-1]. The wins in the first-round set both players up to take on top seeds at the tournament.
Diaz faced off against the number two seed in the tournament, Logan Smith. Diaz took set one over Smith 7-5, but an injury in the second set forced Diaz to end the match, giving Smith the win in round two.
Cabrera took on the number eleven seed in the second round of the international tournament, Pierce Rollins. Rollins got the best of Cabrera, defeating the Maverick in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Diaz and Cabrera will have the next week off. The next tournament for the Mavericks tennis squad will be the prestigious ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma starting Oct. 5.
