TROY, Ala. – In one of the biggest league games so far this season, the Lady Mavs fell to Troy, 85-69, at Trojan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, UTA falls to 12-8 on the season and 6-2 in conference, while Troy improves to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in Sun Belt play and takes sole possession of first-place in the SBC standings.
Claire Chastain scored a game-high 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. The sophomore also added four boards.
Aysia Evans added 17 points, three boards, three steals and a pair of assists.
Terryn Milton chipped in with 13 points and three dimes.
UTA shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor and held Troy to just 35.3 percent (24-of-68). The Trojans won the rebounding battle 58-31.
UTA won the battle of the boards (48-34) and also outscored the Jaguars 34-18 in the paint.
The Lady Mavs has a solid start to the game after an 8-2 run gave the visitors an 8-5 lead with 4:59 left in the first quarter. Troy responded with a 17-0 run, building a 22-8 lead in the second-quarter. UTA didn't go away, winning the second-quarter scoring battle 23-21 and trailed 37-31 at the half. Troy outscored the Mavericks 48-38 in the second-half and picked up the 85-69 victory over the team they were tied with atop the Sun Belt Standings.
The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 1) when they head to San Marcos to face Texas State. Tip off for the contest is set for 2:00 p.m.
