@UTAMavsWBB Tripped Up At Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas. – Three Lady Mavs scored in double figures, but a 31-point fourth quarter propelled Texas State to a 72-55 upset of UTA on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon at Strahan Arena.

With the loss, UTA falls to 12-9 on the season and 6-3 in conference, while Texas State improves to 8-12 on the year and 1-8 in Sun Belt play.

Marie Benson led the Lady Mavs with 19 points and 11 rebounds to record her 5th double-double of the season and 32nd of her collegiate career. Aysia Evans added 13 points and a game-high five steals, while Barbara Benson chipped in with a season-high 13 points, to go with two rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.

UTA shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the floor, while the Bobcats knocked down 44.8 percent (26-of-58) of their field goal attempts. The Lady Mavs edged Texas St. in the rebounding battle 36-35, but committed 17 turnovers to the Bobcats' 13 miscues.

Trailing 18-15 after one quarter, UTA outscored Texas St. 18-10 and limited the Bobcats to just 30.8% shooting in the 2nd quarter to grab a 5-point lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth period that saw Texas State outscore UTA 13-11 and cut the Lady Mavericks lead down to just three points (44-41).

In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats used a 19-1 run to take a 15-points lead (60-45) with 3:47 remaining in the contest. Texas State went on to outscore UTA 31-11  in the final quarter, en route to picking up their first conference victory of the season.

The Lady Mavericks will be back in action next week when they host a pair of Sun Belt opponents at College Park Center. UTA welcomes App State (Feb. 6) and Coastal Carolina (Feb. 8).
