NEW ORLEANS – UT Arlington Athletics had 141 student-athletes recognized on Thursday by the Sun Belt Conference for their academic performance as the league released their 2019-2020 SBC Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll.
Â
UTA had 75 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's list, which requires a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2019-2020 fall and spring semesters. An additional 66 student-athletes earned a spot on the Academic Honor Roll for posting a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49.
Â
The softball team led the way with 18 selections to the Commissioner's list, followed by women's track and field/cross country (14) and volleyball (12). Additionally, all seven members of the women's golf program garnered a spot on the list.
Â
Baseball led all programs with 15 Academic Honor Roll selections, while men's track and field/cross country added 14 representatives.
Â
"We are very proud that our student-athletes continue to succeed in their on-field competitions, but also make an impact in the community and flourish in the classroom," said Director of Athletics Jim Baker. "Our coaches doing a fantastic job emphasizing academics and our academic staff works tirelessly to continue that success."
Â
Overall, there was an increase of nearly 40 Mavericks to the lists from a year ago while the cumulative GPA rose to 3.197 – up from 3.08 in 2018-19.
Â
While the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the worldwide COVID-19 Pandemic, UTA's student-athletes still produced numerous individual and team accolades, but none more impressive than their collective 3.4 GPA this past spring – believed to be best GPA in department history. Each of UTA's 15 teams had better than a 3.0 GPA, despite the upheaval to a virtual online-learning experience midway through the semester.
In total, 2,402 student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll which included 1,378 student-athletes on the Commissioner's List and 1,024 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll list.
