@UTAMavsMTEN Upset Bid Falls Short at No. 47 Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – The UT Arlington men's tennis team (5-3) came up short of an upset bid on Friday afternoon, falling to the 47th ranked Wichita State Shockers 4-2.

Doubles started in thrilling fashion for the Mavericks.  After starting out trailing in all three matches, Eduard Simo and Alan Sau Franco battled back to win Court Three 6-4.  The 27th ranked Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa was too much to handle on Court One as Alejandro Hayen and Miguel Cabrera fell 6-3.  Trailing 6-5, Angel Diaz and Solano Caffarena fought back to win back-to-back games to win Court Two 7-6 and secure the doubles point for the Mavericks.

Singles action was tight between the two teams, with the final two matches of the day going to three sets.  Alejandro Hayen fell in the No. 1 singles spot 6-4, 6-3.  Angel Diaz quickly made up the point with a 6-3, 7-6 win on Court Two, but losses from Miguel Cabrera (6-4, 6-0) and Ricardo Alban (6-0, 6-7) on Courts Three and Four gave the Shockers a 3-2 match lead.

After falling behind 6-2 in set one, Eduard Simo fought back in set two to win 7-6 and force a decisive third set. After taking a 5-0 lead in set three, Benjamin Niv fought back to tie the set at five.  With the momentum on his side, Niv went on to win the match, 7-5 and claim the Shocker victory.

The Mavericks will return to the UTA Tennis Center on Wednesday (Feb. 26) with a doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State (10 am) and Midwestern State (3 pm).
