Aysia Evans poured in a career-high 24 points in UTA's 80-62 loss to Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) at College Park Center.
With the loss, UTA falls to 13-10 on the season and 7-4 in conference, while the Chanticleers move to 19-3 on the year and 9-2 in Sun Belt play.
Evans shot 8-of-15 from the field, 3-of-7 from long distance and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe to finish with her career-high and game-high 24 points. She also added five boards, four steals and three assists.
Barbara Benson chipped in with 10 points and two rebounds off the bench.
Claire Chastain added eight points, six boards, four assists and a pair of steals in the loss.
UTA shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the floor, while the visitors, who outrebounded UTA 61-35, knocked down 40 percent (26-of-65) of their field goal attempts. The Lady Mavericks, after making nine three-pointers in their win over App State on Thursday, made 6-of-25 shots from behind the arc.
UTA started the afternoon with five-straight points before the Chants would answer. UTA went on to take an 18-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Coastal Carolina took control of the game and never looked back. Caitlin Roche and Zacharyia Esmon combined to go 4-of-8 from behind the arc in the frame as the Chants took a 36-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
A layup from
Marie Benson and a triple from Evans opened the third quarter for UTA and cut the Chanticleer lead to 36-34. After a bucket from Coastal, UTA would cut the deficit back to two points (39-37) with 6:40 remaining after M. Benson knocked down a pair of free throws. CCU went on to outscore UTA 22-7 over the final 6:40 of the quarter to take a 61-44 lead.
The Chanticleers would push their lead to 21 points in the fourth quarter before securing the 18-point win (80-62).
The Lady Mavs will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State. The tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
