JONESBORO, Ark. – The UTA women's basketball team knocked down 12 triples in an 89-62 road victory over Arkansas State on Thursday night at First National Bank Arena.
With the win, the Lady Mavs improve to 14-10 on the season and 8-4 in conference and move into a tie for third place in the Sun Belt standings with Little Rock, while the Red Wolves fall to 9-14 on the year and 6-6 in Sun Belt play.
Marie Benson finished with game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds to register her sixth double-double of the season.
Claire Chastain added 17 points and five assists, while
Terryn Milton filled the stat sheet with 16 points, eight assists, six boards and four steals.
UTA shot 52.9 percent (36-of-68) from the floor, while the home team was limited to just 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field. The Lady Mavericks knocked down 12-of-24 shots from long distance, falling one three-pointer shy of tying the program record for three-pointers made in a single game (13). The Lady Mavs assisted on 27 of their 36 made field goals in the win. UTA also won the rebound battle 41-26 and forced A-State into 19 turnovers.
The Lady Mavs, who never trailed on the evening, led 43-38 at the half. Arkansas State pulled to within 45-42 less than two minutes into the second half, but the Lady Mavericks responded with a 10-2 run to grab a double-figure lead (55-44). UTA went on to outscore A-State 21-10 in the third quarter to take a 62-48 advantage after 30 minutes of action. The Lady Mavs shot 64 percent in the fourth quarter and cruised to the 89-62 victory.
The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15), when they take on Little Rock (10-13, 8-4 SBC) at the Jack Stephens Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
