ARLINGTON, Texas – Anthony Dominguez knocked in a season-high four runs as the UT Arlington baseball team (10-3) defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 13-7 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday night.
Â
Carlos Tavera (W, 3-1) earned the start for the Mavericks tossing 5.0 innings. He struck out eight batters and gave up two runs off four hits.Â
Tanner King three 3.0 innings of relief, striking out four Roadrunners and giving up two runs off four hits.Â
Tristan Tom saw his first action of the year and gave up three runs off two hits, while
Brennan Smith finished the game with one shutout inning.
Â
The bats came alive for the Mavericks, finishing with 13 runs off 12 hits, led by
Phillip Childs 3-for-5 day at the plate. Along with Dominguez,
Zac Cook and
Andrew Keefer each finished with a multi-RBI day, both finishing with two.Â
Connor Aube (3),
Andrew Miller (2) and
Matthew Cavanagh (2) each scored multiple runs.
Â
The Roadrunners got out a small lead in the third inning using back-to-back singles to centerfield to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.
Â
The lead wouldn't last long, however, as Childs and Keefer quickly turned the momentum in the Mavs favor with shots down the right field line. Childs scored two runs on a single to tie the game, while Keefer doubled and pushed two runs home to give the Mavericks the lead that wouldn't not be surrendered.
Â
UTSA would score one in the sixth inning coming off a single by Shane Sirdashney.
Â
Dominguez shut down any Roadrunner momentum with a three-run blast to right field in the bottom frame to push the score to 7-3.
Â
UTA would get three more the next inning.Â
Cole Solomon started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Cavanagh scored on a wild pitch. Dominguez would drive in his fourth run with a ground out to short stop.
Â
Chase Keng drove in the fourth run of the day for the Roadrunners with a single down the left field line.
Â
The Mavericks finished their scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning.Â
Justin Marino grounded out to second base but scored
Dylan Paul before Cook connected on a triple to score two more runs and make the score 13-4.
Â
UTSA scored three runs in the top of the ninth, scoring on two singles and a wild pitch, but the Maverick lead was too much as UTA finished the game with a double play to win 13-7.
Â
The Mavericks and Roadrunners will play game two of their three game series tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Clay Gould Ballpark.
