ARLINGTON - UT Arlington women's basketball head coach Krista Gerlich has announced the signing of standout Wyvette Mayberry.
Mayberry, a 5-foot-7 guard from Tulsa, Okla, will join soon-to-be Lady Mavs – Lexy Keys (Tahlequah Sequoyah HS; Tahlequah, Okla.) and JUCO transfer Ka'Lia Smith (South Plains College) – as members of the incoming recruiting class.
"I can't wait to coach Wyvette," said Gerlich. "She is a high IQ basketball player with a very smooth game. She knocks down the three-ball with ease, gets to the rim and distributes to her teammates, but her defense is what excites me the most. She's a tenacious on the ball defender. Being a coach's kid and coming from an extremely talented basketball family, Wyvette brings a toughness and a competitiveness that will continue to elevate our basketball team's success. She also excels in the classroom and is a winner on and off the court. It's going to be a lot of fun watching Wyvette and Lexy Keys in our backcourt the next four years."
Â
Mayberry was part of an Arkansas state championship team as a freshman (Fayetteville HS) and a state runner-up team as a sophomore (Watson Chapel HS). She returned home to Oklahoma to lead the Booker T. Washington Hornets in scoring in her final two seasons. She was named Tournament of Champions MVP, as well as Frontier Valley league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year. She also earned a spot on The Oklahoman's Super 5 with future teammate Lexy Keys.
Â
Mayberry averaged 15.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 steals as a senior, leading Booker T. Washington to a 22-4 record and a berth to the area finals. Mayberry also led her squad to a No. 1 ranking in 6A girls basketball for part of the season.
Â
The Lady Mavs wrapped up the 2019-20 season with a 21-11 overall record (14-4 SBC). In the regular season finale at ULM, UTA picked up a 74-67 road victory to give head coach Krista Gerlich win her 120th game as UTA head coach and become the all-time winningest coach in program history, breaking a tie with Donna Capps.
