Lady Mavs Complete Sweep Of A-State To Close Regular Season

JONESBORO, Ark. - The UT Arlington women's basketball team completed the weekend sweep of Arkansas State with a 75-64 win over the Red Wolves on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.

With the win, UTA closes the 2020-21 regular season with a 13-6 overall record and 11-4 record in Sun Belt play, while the Red Wolves drop to 9-11 and 4-10 in league action.

Terryn Milton led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. The Owasso, Okla. native also added six rebounds and six assists in the win. Katie Ferrell chipped in with 14 points, six assists, three boards and three steals. Ferrell knocked down a career-high triples on the day. Bre Wickware added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Shyia Smith, who was in foul trouble much of the day and only played 17 minutes, finished with nine points and four boards. Michaela Wright registered eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks in 25 minutes off the bench.

UTA, who shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor and 40.9 percent from three-point range, forced A-State into 20 turnovers and turned those miscues into 19 points.

Trailing 7-5 with 6:50 left in the first period, the Lady Mavs outscored the home team 16-4 and took a 10-point lead (21-11) after 10 minutes of play and never looked back. A-State fought their way back into the game in the second half. In the fourth quarter, the Red Wolves were able to make it a two-score deficit, but the Lady Mavericks used a 6-0 to stretch their lead back to 10. A-State would cut it to six points twice down the stretch, but UTA was able to hold off the comeback bid and pick up the 75-64 win.

The Lady Mavs, the No. 2 seed (West) in the 2021 Sun Belt Tournament (March 5-8; Pensacola, Fla.), will now turn their attention to postseason play. UTA will hit the court again in the SBC Quarterfinal Round on Saturday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. against the winner of No. 3 (East) App State/No. 6 (West) ULM. The Sun Belt Conference plans to release the full tournament bracket on Sunday.
