Lady Mavs Fall To App State In SBC Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The two-seeded (West) UTA women's basketball team had to fight off a rough shooting day and foul calls against them in the second half and were upset by #3E Appalachian State, 54-46, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Sun Belt Championship Saturday afternoon at Pensacola State College's Hartsell Arena. In the second half, UTA was called for 15 fouls to App State's 6. App State also shot 16 free-throws in the second half, compared to just 6 for the Lady Mavericks.

With the loss, the Lady Mavs fall to 13-7 on the season, while App State improves to 15-11 on the year and moves on to the SBC Semifinals to face #1E Troy. The loss also marked the second consecutive season that the Lady Mavericks were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the SBC Tourney.

The Lady Mavs shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, including 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three-point range, in the loss. App State was held to just 26.8 percent (15-of-56) from the field and 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from behind the arc.

Turnovers and free throws had a huge effect on the outcome of the game. UTA committed 21 turnovers to the Mountaineers' 16. App State also made more free-throws (22) than the Lady Mavs attempted (14). The Mountaineers made 22-of-28 freebies, while UTA knocked down 8-of-14 attempts from the charity stripe.

Terryn Milton led UTA with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a pair of blocks. Shyia Smith chipped in with 10 points. Katie Ferrell finished with seven points, three boards and three assists. Barbara Benson added six points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
