ARLINGTON, Texas – The bats came alive for the UT Arlington baseball team on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark as they defeated Lamar 11-3 to take game three of the four game series. The Mavericks improve to 6-8 on the season and end a four-game skid.
Maverick pitching once again put UTA in position to win. Junior
David Moffat (W, 2-0) tossed 6.0 innings without giving up any earned runs. He struck out five batters while walking just one.
Jack Hagan (2.0 IP) and
Brennan Smith (1.0 IP) came on in relief, pitching the final three innings.
UTA finished with 13 hits on the day, led by
Andrew Millers 3-for-4 game at the plate.
Connor Aube,
Dylan Paul and
Tommy Williams each finished with multi-hit days coming away with two hits each. Paul drove in a game-high four runs, with three coming off a three-RBI double.
Josh Minjarez (3 R), Paul (2 R) and Miller (2 R) each scored twice.
The day didn't start how the Mavericks wanted. Two two-out errors allowed the Cardinals to score two runs in the first inning. The UTA defense would buckle down, however, and keep Lamar off the board for the next seven innings.
The Maverick bats got going in the second inning.
Dylan Paul drove in the first run with an RBI double, before Minjarez gave the Mavericks the lead with a two-run home run with the first pitch he saw.
Tommy Williams hit a triple with the next at-bat and was brought home with a sacrifice bunt by
Sam Gotlieb to make the score 4-2.
An inning later, Williams hit a line drive to right field that was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing Minjarez to score the fifth run of the game for the Mavs.
The onslaught continued in the fourth inning for UTA as the Mavs scored six runs.
Tyler Rice drove in the first run with a single to left center. Following singles from
Boone Montgomery and
Andrew Miller, Paul found the gap in left field to push all three base runners home. After Paul advanced to third on a wild pitch, Williams knocked in Paul with a sacrifice fly.
Cason Gregory ended the scoring for the Mavericks with an RBI double down the right field line – his first RBI of his career.
The Cardinals would get one run back in the eighth inning with a solo shot to right field, but the Mavericks would hold on to the win 11-3.
UTA will look to even the series in the finale, tomorrow at 1 pm at Clay Gould Ballpark.
