ARLINGTON, Texas – For the third time in four games, the UT Arlington baseball was shut out by the Lamar Cardinals, losing 4-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks fall to 6-9 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 7-2.
Cade Winquest (L, 0-2) started for the Mavericks, tossing 4.0 innings in the loss. He gave up two earned runs off seven hits, while striking out two batters.
Logan Austin (2.0 IP),
Zach Norris (2.0 IP) and
Matt Novis (1.0 IP) finished the game in relief. Norris gave up one earned run while striking out two batters. For the weekend, the Maverick starting pitchers walked just five batters.
UTA finished with just three hits on the day coming from the bats of
Connor Aube,
Boone Montgomery and
Josh Minjarez. The Mavericks had six other bases runners from walks.
Cason Gregory,
Tyler Rice,
Andrew Miller,
Dylan Paul and
Tommy Williams each reached base from walks, including two from Gregory.
The Maverick batters went 0-for-16 with runners on base and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Lamar began the game by using an throwing error by the Mavericks to put a baserunner on second. Following back-to-back fly balls, the Cardinals scored the first run of the game off a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals took back-to-back pitches in the third inning to hit back-to-back home runs and score two more runs.
An insurance run would come in the 8
th inning for the Cardinals as a hit batter with the bases loaded drove in the run to make the game 4-0.
The Mavericks will have five days to regroup and prepare for their Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday, March 19
th when they will host South Alabama at 6:30 pm at Clay Gould Ballpark.
