ARLINGTON, Texas – Dylan took the first pitch he saw in the 12
th inning and drove it over the right field wall to walk off the UT Arlington baseball team over Abilene Christian, 3-2 on Tuesday night. The Mavericks improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Wildcats move to 5-3.
Five pitchers took the mound for the Mavericks over the 12 innings.
Cade Winquest started the game, allowing just one hit in four innings while striking out three batters.
Logan Austin (2.0 IP),
Tristan Tom (0.2 IP),
Michael Wong (2.1 IP) and
Zach Norris (3.0 IP) each pitched in relief. Norris (W, 1-1) picked up the victory after keeping the Wildcats scoreless over the final three innings.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day as
Connor Aube,
Phillip Childs and
Dylan Paul each finished with two.
Andrew Miller reached base three times, all coming off walks. Overall, the Mavericks walked 10 times, but also struck out 18 times.
The game started out promising for the Mavericks, loading the bases with no outs. The next three batters would be a sign of things to come, however, as the Mavs were unable to score any runs. In the game, the Mavericks left 14 runners stranded including bases loaded four times.
The Mavs got on the board in the second inning off a single from
Connor Aube to score
Cason Gregory.
The lead was increased by one run the following inning with an RBI from
Sam Crowell to make it 2-0.
ACU battled back, scoring one run in the fifth off a single and another in the seventh off an error by the Mavericks.
It wasn't until the bottom of the 12
th that the Mavericks were able to wrap up the game when Paul took the first pitch fastball and sent it over the right field wall to win the game.
UTA will travel to San Antonio this weekend to for a four-game series against UTSA starting Friday (March 5).
