After Strong Start, UTA Drops Final Game in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team started off strong in the final day of tournament play as the arm of senior Jojo Valencia aided a 6-1 win over South Dakota before the Mavericks fell to No. 10 Texas 9-1 in six innings.

INSDIE THE BOX SCORE – South Dakota (W 6-1)
Senior outfielder Madison Miller notched two hits (2 RBI) joined by Jadyn Erickson (1 RBI) and Jessica Carreon (1 RBI) who also recorded two hits in the game.

First baseman Aileen Garcia and center fielder Reagan Hukill (1 RBI) followed closely with one hit.

Senior Jojo Valencia tossed a complete game and limited South Dakota to just two hits. The left hander retired 21 batters with 3 strike outs and allowed just one run, getting the win.

PLAY BY PLAY – South Dakota (W 6-1)
  • South Dakota scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.
  • UTA got a rally going in the third where four runs were knocked courtesy of base-hits from Miller, Courtney Ogle and Carreon.
  • The Mavericks carried their momentum onto the fifth inning where two more runs crossed from the bat of Miller who singled to right.
  • Valencia went on to retire 21 batters in the Coyotes' lineup and the Mavericks picked up the 6-1 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – No. 10 Texas (L 9-1)
Erickson and Evans paced UTA at the plate going 2-2- as Erickson was responsible for UTA's lone run.

Right hander Kenedy Hines got the start in the circle for the Mavericks and threw two innings allowing three runs off four hits before being replaced by junior Laura Henriksen.

The California native allowed one earned run and five hits (2.2 IP) before Allie Gardiner made an appearance in the fifth inning for the Mavericks and allowed three hits across seven batters faced (1 IP).

UTA could not find a way to score anymore runs after the third inning as Hines took the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY – No. 10 Texas (L 9-1)
  • The Longhorns scored their first run from a sacrifice fly to right field to grab an early 1-0 lead in their first at-bats.
  • UTA tied it up with an RBI- double from the bat of Erickson.
  • The Longhorns scored seven runs across the third and fourth inning to take the lead 8-1.
  • UTA was unable to plate any runs after the third inning and Texas scored from an RBI- single from the bat of Washington to pick up the 9-1 win in six innings.

The Mavericks will travel to Huntsville, Texas to face off wit Sam Houston for a midweek matchup Wednesday (Mar. 31) with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
