SAN MARCOS, Texas – Carlos Tavera struck out 12 batters, but it wasn't enough to lift the UT Arlington baseball team (10-15, 1-3 Sun Belt) over Texas State (12-15, 3-4 Sun Belt) on Thursday night, getting shut out 2-0 at Bobcat Ballpark.
Carlos Tavera (L, 0-4) started on the bump for the Mavs, tossing 6.0 innings. Tavera tied a career-high in strikeouts, putting down 12 Bobcats on the day. He gave up two runs off five hits.
Tanner King tossed the final two innings, not allowing any baserunners.
The Mavericks could only muster three hits on the day.
Cason Gregory went 2-for-2 at the plate and reached a third time with a walk.
Dylan Paul came away with the other hit for the Mavericks.
This marks the fifth time this season that UTA has failed to score a run.
Tavera was dealing early, as the Fort Worth native sat down 10 batters through just four innings, while allowing just one base runner.
The Bobcats got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff double from Cole Coffey, followed by a sacrifice bunt put the first run 90 feet away. Tavera was able to force a pop out in foul territory and strike out the final out to end the threat.

Sam Gotlieb put the first score just 90 feet away. Gregory would be thrown out at home, trying to reach on a ground ball hit to second base.
Texas State used a two-out rally in the sixth to score the only two runs of the game. A full-count solo home run from Justin Thompson started the scoring the Bobcats. Jose Gonzalez followed up with a single, advanced to third by another single and crossed home plate from a wild pitch.
