SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UT Arlington women's tennis team (16-3, 8-0 SBC) completed their quest for an undefeated Sun Belt Conference season on Saturday, defeating the Texas State Bobcats (5-12, 0-7 SBC) 4-3 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. This marks the 5
th undefeated SBC season the Mavericks have had since joining the league eight years ago.
"Extremely proud of the girls and the way they competed in our division this year," said head coach
Diego Benitez. "Going undefeated is an amazing accomplishment and hopefully we can use this as momentum as we head into the conference tournament next week."
The Mavericks started out hot, clinching the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
Carla Pons and
Almudena Boza won at No. 3 doubles 6-4.
Liz Chileno and
Nanaka Takeuchi clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
The Mavericks quickly clinched the match taking No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to get their three required points.
Carla Pons won her 20
th match of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 straight set win at No. 4.
Lucia Natal stayed perfect on the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5. Natal is now 11-0 on the year.
Almudena Boza clinched the match at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 win. With the match clinched, the two teams continued to play.
Momoka Horiguchi fell on court one in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).
Liz Chileno followed with a 7-5, 6-4 loss at No. 2 before
Polina Akimova was retired on court three.
