Middle Third Troubles Mavericks

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The UT Arlington baseball team (19-21) was unable to overcome five runs scored in the middle third by McNeese (19-21) on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Cowboys at Joe Miller Ballpark 5-3.  Despite the loss, the Mavericks still won the series after winning both games of the doubleheader yesterday.

David Moffat (L, 3-3) started on the bump for the Mavericks. The junior threw 4.2 innings, allowing five runs off eight hits in the loss. Brayden Brooks finished the game, throwing 3.1 shutout innings of relief.

The Mavericks finished with eight hits on the day, led by Phillip Childs' 2-for-4 day.  Andrew Miller, Dylan Paul and Cole Solomon each finished with an RBI.

The Maverick continued their momentum from the night before in the first inning, scoring two runs in the opening frame. With runners on first and second, Andrew Miller single to right field to score the first run and put runners on the corners. Dylan Paul followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Mavs an early 2-0 advantage.

UTA added another run in the fourth inning. Josh Minjarez led off with a double and advanced to third from a wild pitch.  A Wyatt Divis walk put the runners on the corners for Cole Solomon, who bunted his way on base and scored a run in the process.

McNeese answered in the bottom frame as the first three batters reached base, scoring two runs off a double to left field.

The Cowboys picked up where they left off in the 5th.  McNeese would load the bases with two outs, before a bases-clearing double put the Cowboys up for the first time in the series, 5-3.

The Mavericks had runners on first and second with the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning, but a double play ended the threat and game.
