Mavs Unable to Slow High-Powered Horned Frogs

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (19-22) fell to No. 5 TCU (30-10) at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday night, 8-3. The Horned Frogs swept the season series with the win over the Mavericks.

The Mavericks used seven pitchers in the outing. Cade Winquest (L, 1-5) started for UTA, but lasted only 2.0 innings after giving up four runs off four hits.  Jack Hagan (2.0 IP) was the first Maverick to come in for relief, allowing three runs off four hits.  Riley Bost, Jarod Seasls, Brennan Smith, and Tristan Tom each threw one shut out inning for the Mavericks.  Matt Novis tossed one inning and allowed one run off two hits.

The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day, led by Connor Aube's 2-for-3 day at the plate.  Dylan Paul, Andrew Miller, Josh Minjarez, JD Wadleigh and Sam Gotlieb each picked up one hit.  Aube, Miller and Wadleigh were responsible for the runs driven in for the Mavs, each finishing with one.

UTA got on the board first in the game, scoring in the bottom of the first.  Boone Montgomery led off with a hit-by-pitch before advancing to third.  Aube hit a sacrifice fly to put the Mavericks up 1-0.

The lead for the Mavericks was short-lived, as the powerful Horned Frogs offense got to work in the second. The first four batters reached base for TCU with the final being a home run to put the Horned Frogs up 4-1.

The Mavericks got one back in the bottom frame.  Wadleigh hit a double down the left field line before Sam Gotlieb reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Wadleigh to reach home for the Mavs second run of the game.

Scoring took a break until the fifth inning, where the first three TCU batters reached base again, driving in two runs and keeping runners on the corner.  A sacrifice fly scored the final run of the inning as TCU extended their lead to five runs.

UTA scored their final run in the sixth inning.  Aube led off with a double, advancing to third from a ground out to shortstop.  Miller followed with a groundout to second base to push in Aube.

The Horned Frogs added a security run in the eighth inning. A walk and single put runners at first and second before a single to right field drove in the final run of the game to make the score 8-3.
