SAN MARCOS, Texas – Ten runs were scored in the final three innings as the UT Arlington baseball team (12-15, 3-3 SBC) defeated the Texas State Bobcats (12-17, 3-6 SBC) 10-5 at Bobcat Ballpark Saturday afternoon. It marks the first time since 1994 that the Mavericks have won a three-game series over the Bobcats in San Marcos.
David Moffat (ND) picked up the start on the mound for the Mavericks, tossing 6.0 innings. He gave up four earned runs off nine hits.
Zach Norris (W, 3-2) threw two scoreless innings, striking out three batters and allowing one hit.
Michael Wong threw the final inning, giving up one run off a solo home run.
UTA finished with 16 hits on the day, led by
Josh Minjarez' 4-for-5 day at the plate. He led the Mavs with five RBI, four coming off a grand slam in the eighth inning.
Andrew Miller,
Tyler Rice and
Dylan Paul each finished with two hits. Miller joined Minjarez with a multi-RBI day, finishing with two. JD Wadeligh,
Connor Aube and
Cason Gregory each drove in one run. Aube connected on a solo home run in the seventh inning – his sixth home run of the season.
The Bobcats got on the board first, scoring two runs in the third inning. With two outs, Texas State hit a single and double to put runners at second and third. A diving Montgomery made a stop on a hard-hit ground ball to third base with the next batter, but an errant throw pulled Paul off first base and allowed two runs to score.
Texas State got back to work in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles put the Bobcats in business before a double to left field push two more runs home. Another single through the left side of the infield scored the final run of the inning as the Bobcats took a 5-0 lead.
The Mavericks were able to load the bases for
JD Wadleigh in the seventh inning. Wadleigh hit a ground ball through the right side of the infield to make it a 5-1 game.
The bats got hot in the eighth inning.
Connor Aube led off with his sixth home run of the season to cut into the Bobcat deficit, 5-2. Paul walk, while Montgomery and
Tyler Rice singled to load the bases for
Josh Minjarez. With a full count, the sixth-year senior unloaded on his second grand slam in as many weeks to put the Mavericks up 6-5.
Andrew Miller followed with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Cason Gregory drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single down the left field line to complete the six-run inning.
The scoring continued in the ninth inning. Paul and Rice both singled to put runners on for Minjarez, who came through again by driving in one more run with a double to left field. Miller followed with a single to right field, scoring Rice and Minjarez to push the score to 10-5.
The Bobcats got one back in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out solo home run, but it was not enough as the Mavericks held on to the win, 10-6.
