TROY, Ala. – In a thrilling extra-inning game, the UT Arlington softball team upset #3 Troy 2-1 in the Sun Belt Championship opener Wednesday night.

The Mavs' offense produced five hits as
Jessica Carreon (1-4),
KJ Murphy (1-4),
Aileen Garcia (1-3),
Jadyn Erickson (1-3) and
Reagan Hukill (1-3, 1 RBI) were responsible.
Senior
JoJo Valencia earned the start in the circle for the Mavericks in game one of the tournament against the Trojans.
The lefty threw three innings where she allowed one earned run off two hits across ten batters faced.
Sophomore
Kenedy Hines replaced Valencia on the mound and had a stellar outing throwing 4.1 innings allowing just one hit across 16 batters.
Junior
Allie Gardiner came in for relief for two outs as she earned her fifth save securing UTA's 2-1 victory over #3 Troy.
PLAY BY PLAY
- Troy plated the first run of the game off a solo home run over the left field wall in the second inning.
- The Mavericks stranded two runners on the bases across the fourth and fifth inning unable to plate any across.
- After Murphy ripped a single up the middle in the sixth, senior Garcia advanced Murphy to third with a sacrifice bunt. Hukill powered through one to tie it up 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center.
- Carreon reached first with a single through the right side before Garcia notched a single to right center that advanced Carreon to third. With a throwing error from the Trojans, Carreon scored to get the Mavs on top 2-1 in the eighth inning.
- Gardiner came into shut down Troy's offense to secure her fifth save of the season.

The Mavericks will advance to Thursday at 12:30 p.m. to face the winner of the matchup between #10 Georgia State and #2 Texas State.
