MONROE, La. – The UT Arlington baseball team (23-25, 11-7 Sun Belt) lost both games of a doubleheader against ULM (22-22, 9-12 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks fell 5-1 in game one before falling short of a rally in game two, 10-8. It's the first series the Mavericks have lost since March 21 against South Alabama.
GAME ONE RECAP | ULM wins 5-1
Kody Bullard (L, 6-3) started for the Mavericks, tossing 7.0 innings in the loss. Bullard allowed four runs off nine hits and struck out four batters.
Jack Hagan (0.1 IP) and
Brayden Brooks (0.2 IP) threw the final inning of the game. Hagan allowed one run off two hits.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day, led by
Connor Aube's 2-for-4 day at the plate. Phillips Childs,
Andrew Miller,
Dylan Paul,
Tommy Williams and
Sam Crowell each finished with one hit in the game.
The Warhawks went straight to business in the first inning, matching their run total from Friday night. ULM led off the game with a double before being brough home with a hard-hit ball to third base.
ULM went back to work in the second, loading the bases with their first three batters. A sacrifice fly drove in the second run of the day for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks connected on a two-run home run in the third inning to increase their lead to four runs.
The Mavericks loaded the bases in the seventh inning but were unable to bring nay runs home as they stranded the bases juiced.
UTA loaded the bases again the eighth inning, this time with no outs.
Anthony Dominguez would hit into a double play but score one run in the process.
The Warhawks answered in the bottom frame with their third leadoff double of the game. A single through the left side pushed the insurance run home.
GAME TWO RECAP | ULM wins 10-8
David Moffat (L, 4-4) started for the Mavericks, allowing five earned runs off six hits in 3.1 innings.
Michael Wong came on in relief in the third, throwing 2.2 innings, allowing three runs off seven hits in the process.
Zach Norris and
Matt Novis tossed the final two shutout innings for the Mavericks.
UTA finished with nine hits.
Phillip Childs,
Connor Aube,
Andrew Miller, and
Josh Minjarez each finished with 2-for-4 days at the plate. Minjarez led the team with three RBI, while Aube and Miller each finished with two RBI.
ULM carried over the momentum from game on into the second. The Warhawks rattled off three quick runs in the first inning to put the Mavericks into an early deficit.
The Mavericks answered in the next half inning.
Andrew Miller walked and was brough home with a two-run home run by
Josh Minjarez. With runners on second and third,
Cole Solomon hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
An inning later, the Mavericks took a three-run lead with back-to-back home runs from
Connor Aube and
Andrew Miller. Aube connected on a two-run shot, while Miller hit a solo shot to left field.
ULM battled back in the bottom of the third, using two doubles and a single to put up three runs and tie the game again.
The Warhawks went back on top in the fourth inning. With runners on first and third, ULM used a squeeze bunt to bring home one run.
ULM scored for a third consecutive inning in the fifth, using a two-out rally to hit two singles and score one run.
The Warhawks connected on their fourth double of the game in the sixth before being brought home with an RBI single to right field. Following a stolen base, another single on a blooper to center field scored the 10
th run for the Warhawks.
Josh Minjarez connected on his second home run in the 8
th inning with a solo shot to left field. It marks the third time this season that Minjarez has had multiple home runs in a game.
Looking to rally,
Phillip Childs and
Connor Aube reached base in the top of the ninth to put runners at first and second for
Andrew Miller. Miller connected on a line drive to right center to drive in one run. That would be all the Mavs could get as a ground out ended the inning.
