ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington women's tennis team continued its hot streak to start the season, picking up two more wins on opening weekend, defeating New Mexico State (5-2) and Weatherford (7-0).
In the morning matchup, the Mavericks quickly clinched the doubles point with wins at lines 3 and 2.
Carla Pons and
Nika Novikova finished first with a 6-1 win on Court 3, followed by
Momoka Horiguchi and
Ana Paula Jimenez securing a 6-2 win on Court 2.
The Mavericks earned four wins in straight sets in the singles matches with Paula Jimenez finishing first on court six with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
Tara Gorinsek put the Mavs one point away from clinching with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court four before
Liz Chileno clinched the victory for UTA with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court one.
The two teams played the remaining matches out with
Carla Pons the first to fall, dropping the number three slot 6-1, 6-3 before
Sarina Reinertsen put the Mavericks back on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court five.
Momoka Horiguchi was the lone three set match. After losing the first set 7-5, Horiguchi forced the tie breaker with a 6-4 win in the second set. Horiguchi would take a 6-5 lead in the 10-point tiebreaker third set, but Chloe Gavino would take five of the next six points to win the third set.
The momentum carried over into the second match of the day. Once again, courts two and three clinched the doubles point for the Mavericks. Pons and Novikova won 6-0 on court three, while Horiguchi and Paula Jimenez took court two 6-1.
Paula Jimenez kept it rolling into singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 on court five.
Tara Gorinsek followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court three before
Sarina Reinertsen clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court four.
With the match decided, the teams played through as
Carla Pons got back on the winning side of singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win at Number 2.
Bruna Casasampere picked up her first win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win before
Liz Chileno finished the match at Number 1 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
ON DECK
The Mavs will be back in action next Friday when they host Cameron and Southeastern Oklahoma State at the UTA Tennis Center beginning at 10 am.
