COLLEGE STATION, Texas – To commence the 2022 season, the UT Arlington softball team dropped both games to Western Kentucky (3-1) and host, Texas A&M (9-0) on Friday in the opening day of the Aggie Classic.
Sophomore
Gracie Bumpurs got the start on the mound against the Hilltoppers while transfer
Jessica Adams and senior
Laura Henriksen shared time in the circle in game two against the Aggies.
At the plate, third baseman
KJ Murphy paced UTA as she finished 2-4 on the day while
Meagan Smith finished with one hit.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Western Kentucky (L 3-1)
KJ Murphy (1-3),
Meagan Smith (1-3) and
Morgan Rios (1-3) were all responsible for the Mavericks' three hits of the contest while Smith also had UTA's lone RBI to her name.
Sophomore Bumpurs earned her first start in the circle for UTA this season and threw six innings. Bumpurs allowed just four hits and three runs across 26 batters faced. Unfortunately, the Mavericks could not get anything going for the remainder of the game, giving Bumpurs the loss (0-1).
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Western Kentucky (L 3-1)
- In the first inning, UTA came out hot in their first at-bats as KJ Murphy led things off with a single up the middle for her first hit of the season. Fellow senior, Meagan Smith, knocked Murphy in with an RBI-single to score UTA's first run of the game.
- After four scoreless innings, the Hilltoppers took a 3-1 lead after they recorded three runs courtesy of a single and a double.
- Unfortunately, UTA could not find a way to answer back as they fell to Western Kentucky, 3-1.

UTA's offense struggled in game two of the Aggie Classic as the squad produced just one hit – which came from the bat of Murphy.
Freshman transfer
Jessica Adams started in the circle and threw 3.2 innings as she allowed six runs off seven hits. Senior
Laura Henriksen made an appearance on the mound in the fourth inning facing just six batters across one inning.
The loss against the Aggies gave Adams her first loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Texas A&M (L, 9-0)
- UTA got its first runner on courtesy of Murphy as she led off the first innings with a walk, but the Mavericks couldn't find a way to get her across.
- After three scoreless innings, Texas A&M grabbed a 7-0 lead after back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Mavs went three up three down at the plate in the top of the fifth before the Aggies extended their lead 9-0 ending in a run-rule after five innings.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will be back on the field on Saturday for day two of the Aggie Classic as they are set to play a doubleheader against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at 10:00 a.m. followed by Texas A&M at 12:30 p.m.
