Azore Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – For the second time this year, UT Arlington guard David Azore has been named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.

Azore continued to establish himself as the best scorer in the Sun Belt with another pair of 25+ point outings in leading UTA to a road split of ULM and Louisiana as the grad student averaged 27 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists for the week. Azore connected at a 50-percent clip from the floor (16-32), 54-percent rate from 3-point range (7-13) and an 88-percent figure from the free throw line (15-17) over the course of the two games.

The Houston native poured in a game-high 29 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists in a slim 74-71 loss to ULM last Thursday, narrowly missing what would have been his fifth 30-point performance of the conference season already; the rest of the league combined has just two such outings.

Two days later, Azore delivered a game-best 27 points, five rebounds and three assists in leading UTA to an 80-77 overtime win at Louisiana, guiding UTA to a series sweep of the Ragin' Cajuns for just the second time in program history (1981). Not included in that stat line was a crucial chase-down blocked shot as time expired in regulation on a potential game-winning shot attempt – just his second rejection of the season.

Azore is averaging a gaudy 25.5 points per game in league play – the only player in the Sun Belt over 19 per contest. He has four 30-point games in conference play, including two performances of better than 35 points. Azore is responsible for the top-three scoring contests in Sun Belt action of 37, 36 and 33 points.

Combined with a Sun Belt Player of the Week honor on Jan. 4, Azore is the first UTA men's basketball player to win multiple conference weekly awards in the same season since Erick Neal also claimed two during the 2018 campaign.

For the entire season, Azore is averaging 19.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He has made 127 free throws to rank as the 10th most by any player in the nation this year, and is connecting at an 83-percent clip from the free throw line.

Azore and the Mavericks return to the College Park Center for their final two home games of the season later this week, beginning with a matchup against Little Rock on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
