ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington baseball team was unable to complete a ninth inning rally, falling in the season opener 4-3 to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday evening.
Four pitchers took the mound in the loss.
David Moffat (L, 0-1) started for the Mavericks, tossing 4.0 innings while giving up four runs off six hits.
Tanner King (1.0 IP) and
Jack Hagan (3.0 IP) combined for four straight scoreless innings. Hagan struck out six batters over his three innings, while allowing just three hits and not walking a batter.
Gray Bailey (1.0) tossed the final scoreless inning.
The Mavericks outhit the Islanders 12-10 on the day, led by
David VanVooren's three hits.
Oscar Ponce (2) and Matt Cavanagh (2) each finished with a multi-hit performance. Ponce,
Wilson Galvan and
Cason Gregory each finished with one RBI.
The Islanders were the first to score, using a two-out single to right field to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Corpus followed up their first inning run with another in the second. With runners on second and third, a sacrifice fly to deep center allowed the runner on third to take home.
The scoring continued for the Islanders in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field to give them a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks answered back with a two-out RBI single from Ponce to score Matt Cavanagh from second base.
A two-run seventh inning put the Mavs within one run.
Cason Gregory drove in the first with an RBI single to right field, scoring Cavanagh for the second time.
Wilson Galvan brought home the second with a single to center field to score Gregory.
In the top of the ninth, the Islanders loaded the bases with no outs, but
Gray Bailey forced two fly outs to end the inning. The second fly ball saw the runner at third try to take home but was easily ousted by the strong-armed
Boone Montgomery in right field to keep the Mavericks rally chances alive.
The Mavericks put one runner on base in the ninth, but were unable to score, falling 4-3.
UTA will be back at Clay Gould Ballpark tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. rematch against the Islanders.
