NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (2-4) split a doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin (2-4) on Sunday – losing 5-3 in the first game before rebounding in game two with a 12-2 win over the Lumberjacks.
GAME ONE RECAP – UTA 3, SFA 5
The Mavericks finished with just six hits on the day, the lowest of their young season.
Zach Henry led UTA with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, coming a single shy of hitting for the cycle. He connected on his first career home run in the game.
Tanner Rice,
Steven Saunders and
Wilson Galvan each contributed one hit.
Four pitchers combined for the eight innings in the loss.
David Moffat (L, 0-2) started for the Mavericks, allowing two runs off six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
Cade Citelli,
Sam Collins, and
Matt Novis each tossed one inning each. Citelli gave up one run off two hits, while Collins gave up two runs off four hits and Novis tossed a shutout inning.
Following two scoreless innings, the Lumberjacks were the first to get on the board in the third inning. After Crowell picked off a runner at third base, Kyle Cullen singled up the middle of the infield to score the runner on second base to put SFA up 1-0.
The Mavericks answered in the fifth inning. Crowell led off the inning with an error past the second basemen before being pushed to third with a single by Galvan. Gregory used a one-out sacrifice fly to drive in the game-tying run.
SFA used two hits in the bottom frame to recapture the lead, scoring one run. An inning later, the Lumberjacks hit a solo home run to go up 3-1.
Zach Henry delivered his third hit of the game with his first career home run, a solo shot to right field, in the top of the seventh to cut into the deficit.
The Lumberjacks once again had an answer for the Mavericks, this time putting up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, using four singles to plate four runs.
Needing three runs in the ninth inning,
Steven Saunders stepped into the box with two outs and ripped a line drive down the right field line to score one run. That would be all the Mavericks would get, however, falling 5-3 in game one.
GAME TWO RECAP – UTA 12, SFA 2
The Mavericks combined for 16 hits – a season high through the first two weeks of the season.

Nick Pierce (2), and
Cade Sumbler (2) each finished with a multi-hit game. Saunders knocked in four RBI, including two with his first career home run. Cavanagh also connected on his first home run of the season.
Michael Wong (W, 1-0) started for the Mavs and tossed 5.0 innings in the win. He took a perfect game into the fifth and finished the game with just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

Jack Hagan (1.0 IP),
Connery Peters (1.0 IP) and
Cade Winquest (1.0 IP) combined in relief effort to close out the game.
The Mavericks got things going in the second inning. Following a lead-off
Zach Henry walk,
Steven Saunders took a full-count pitch and sent the ball over the right field fence for his first career home run to put UTA up 2-0.
UTA loaded the bases an inning later, and with two-outs used a wild pitch to score one run. An errant throw back to the pitch covering home allowed the second run to score. Saunders followed the mistake-filled play with a double off the center field wall, barely missing his second home run of the day, but driving in his third RBI to make it 5-0.
The Mavericks plated two more run in the following inning, extending their lead to seven runs. Sumbler doubled to right field and advanced to third with a single from
Jaden Brown. A ground out from
Justin Marino scored Sumbler, while
Wilson Galvan scored Brown with a single to left field.
The Lumberjacks cut into the lead in the sixth inning, beginning with a leadoff homerun to centerfield. Two SFA singles pushed home the second run of the game for the 'Jacks to make the score 7-2 after six innings.
Cavanagh answered in the 7
th inning, hitting his first home run of the season with a solo shot to left field.
The Mavericks continued their onslaught in the 8
th inning, jumpstarted with a single through the left side of the infield from Galvan. An error and walked loaded the bases before hits from Cavanagh,
Tyler Rice and Pierce scored three consecutive runs to push the score to 11-2.
Saunders came away with his fourth and final RBI in the ninth inning, grounding out to first base and extending the score to 12-2.

The Mavericks will travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU on Tuesday (March 1) at 6 pm.
