UTA NOTES
  • UTA has lived off starting and ending strong so far this year.  Between the first and ninth inning, the Mavericks have scored 23 out of their 60 runs this season.  12 of those runs have come in the 9th inning alone. UTA only scored 9 runs in the 9th inning for the entire 2021 season.
  • A few players have put together impressive on-base streaks early on in the season. Zach Henry has reached successfully in 11 straight games, while Wilson Galvan has reached 9 straight games.  Steven Saunders is riding a six-game hit streak - the second longest of the young season only to Galvan's 7.
  • Maverick relievers have been dominate on the bump for the Mavericks so far this season. When leading after six innings, the bullpen has been able to put away the game for UTA as the Mavs are 3-0 with a lead after six innings.
  • Freshman Zach Henry currently leads the Mavericks with a .343 batting average, but he has also been one of the hardest Mavericks to keep off the base. He has a .540 on-base percentage and leading the Sun Belt Conference in walks per game (1.00)
  • Relief pitcher Connery Peters has made six appearances for the Mavericks this season, tossing 9.0 innings.  He has yet to allow an earned run in any appearance and is holding opponents to a .200 batting average, and is second on the team with 15 strikeouts.
  • March 9th's game against Army marked the first time in UTA baseball history that a set of brothers started for the Mavericks.  Tyler Rice started at second base for UTA, while his younger brother Tanner Rice earned the start in left field.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | UIW
  • The Cardinals enter the weekend with a 4-5 record on the season and are coming off a 6-0 midweek loss at UTSA.  Last weekend, they took one of three over Houston.
  • This will be a preview of sorts for the Mavericks as Incarnate Word will be a future WAC opponent beginning next season.  Currently UTA is 1-1 against WAC opponents, splitting the series against SFA on Feb. 27.
  • Ridge Rogers leads the Cardinals with an even .400 batting average on the season, including five doubles. His six RBI are second on the team to Roberto Gonzalez.
  • Otto Stacey has been an ace out of the bullpen for UIW, tossing 9.2 innings in four appearances. He holds a 0.93 ERA and has struck out seven batters.
SERIES HISTORY
UIW and UTA have met eight times prior to this weekend with the Mavericks owning a 5-3 record against the Cardinals. Head Coach Darin Thomas is 5-2 against UIW.  The Mavericks lost the last game they played, 6-2 in San Antonio in 2019. However, the Mavericks have won four of the past five against the Cardinals.
