SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team dropped a pair of games to Incarnate Word during a doubleheader on Saturday, falling 7-1 in the first game before losing 9-3 in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP – UIW 7, UTA 1
Michael Wong (L, 1-1) earned the start for the Mavericks on the bump. The senior tossed 4.0 innings, allowing six runs off five hits.
Jack Hagan came on in relief in the fifth inning, allowing one run off two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
Ryan Thomas (1.0 IP) made his first career appearances on the mound, striking out two batters.
Trevor Pruitt (1.0 IP) tossed the final inning of the game.
UTA finished with just four hits coming off the bats of
Zach Henry,
Wilson Galvan,
Sam Crowell and
Cason Gregory. Gregory also came away with the lone RBI of the game.
The scoring stood at a standstill until the third inning. UIW used a solo shot to left field to et the scoring started. Despite recording three outs, a wild pitch and a third strike kept the inning alive and put a baserunner at first. The Cardinals used that to their advantage, using a single to push the runner to third before a ground-rule down scored the second run of the inning.
The Mavericks came up just short on a few defensive plays to begin the fifth inning, allowing the Cardinals to load the bases. An errant throw home on a ground ball to third base allowed the first run of the inning to score. A misplayed foul ball to right field scored three more runs and kept a runner at third base. A sacrifice fly pushed the score to 7-0 in favor of UIW.
UTA got one back in the seventh inning, using a line drive to left field from
Cason Gregory to score
Sam Crowell.
GAME TWO RECAP – UIW 9, UTA 3
Gray Bailey (L, 2-1) earned the start for the Mavs, but lasted just 1.1 innings after the Cardinals scored six runs off six hits.
David Moffat took over in relief in the second inning and threw 4.2 innings of relief. He allowed three runs off seven hits and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Matt Novis tossed two shutout innings to end the game.
The Mavs finished with just four hits in the game, led by
Artie Ramirez's 2-for-4 game at the plate.
Steven Saunders and
Cade Sumbler each finished with one hit each. Sumbler knocked two runs with a ground-rule double.
Momentum carried over for the Cardinals from game one, as UIW plated two runs in the bottom of the first in the night game. The Cardinals used three hits, including a double to left center, to take the early 2-0 lead.
UTA answered back a half inning later, loading the bases with two walks and a single before
Cade Sumbler connected on a ground-rule double to center field to score two runs. A wild pitch with the next at-bat scored the third run to give UTA their first lead of the day.
The lead was short-lived for the Mavericks as first three Cardinals batters reached base, scoring one run to even the score before a three-run home run put UIW back on top, 6-3.
The Cardinals used another two-run home run in the third inning to add on to their lead.
The scoring continued in the fourth but would be the last of the game as UIW used a single and a triple to plate one run to make the score 9-3.
