UTA Takes Game One of Coastal Carolina Series

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Mavericks picked up their first conference win Friday night as UTA defeated Coastal Carolina 11-5 to take game one of the three-game series.

The Mavericks out-hit the Chanticleers 12-9 as four Mavs recorded a multi-hit contest. Shortstop Kaylee Cavazos, third baseman KJ Murphy, first baseman Meagan Smith and outfielder Morgan Westbrook all notched two hits each.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Coastal Carolina (W, 11-5)
Cavazos and senior Sophie Wideman paced UTA's offense with 2 RBI a piece as KJ Murphy (2-3), Meagan Smith (2-4), Morgan Rios and Reagan Hukill (1-3) came away with one RBI. Murphy continues to lead the squad with 13 RBI now on the season followed by Smith with 12.

Freshman Cavazos not only recorded her first collegiate hit, but she also knocked her first collegiate home run which was key in the Maverick's comeback win. 

Freshman Jessica Adams got the start on the mound for UTA as she threw 4.1 giving up five runs to Coastal facing 25 batters.

Sophomore Gracie Bumpurs came in for Adams in the fifth as the righty froze the Chanticleer's bats without a single hit allowed. Bumpurs struck out four out of the nine batters faced as she went on to record her third win of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY: Coastal Carolina (W, 11-5)
  • Adams kept the Chants off the board in their first at-bats as UTA grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first ups courtesy of an RBI-single from Murphy.
  • Coastal Carolina's Riley Zana would be its first run of the game in the top of the third that tied it up 1-1 after an RBI-single.
  • The Chants had a 3-run fourth inning as Madison Hudson and Makiya Thomas knocked home runs to take a 4-1 lead.
  • Hukill answered back in the bottom of the fourth as she knocked an RBI-double to right center that scored pinch-runner Cram.
  • Another Coastal Carolina long ball extended the Chant's lead 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, UTA put six on the board as freshman Cavazos got things started as she launched a 2-run bomb over the left field wall that scored Wideman to make it a 1-run ball game (5-4). Shortly after, the Mavs went on to draw 5 walks with RBIs from Westbrook and Wideman to take an 8-5 lead.
  • UTA kept piling on the runs as Rios, Smith and White knocked in three runs with RBI-singles from Rios and White along an RBI-double from Smith that made it 11-5.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will be back on the field Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. as UTA will face Coastal Carolina for the second game of the series.
