CONWAY, S.C. – The UT Arlington men's tennis team (11-8, 0-2 SBC) were unable to hold off the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday morning, falling 4-3 in the final match.
The Mavericks took an early lead, clinching the doubles point with wins from
Alan Sau Franco and
Ricardo Alban on court three (6-3) and
Anton Shepp and
Miguel Cabrera on court one (6-4).
Shepp continued his momentum, taking his match with a 6-1, 6-3 win on line three, but the Chants answered back with an immediate win over
Maks Lukman on court four 7-6, 6-0.
Alan Sau Franco put UTA a point away from a match victory with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at line one, but the Chants wouldn't go away quietly. Coastal fought back and tied the match at three with wins over
Miguel Cabrera on line two (6-1, 4-6, 4-6) and
Daichi Akiyoshi on line six (3-6, 7-6, 3-6).
The match came down to court five as
Solano Caffarena battled back from a 6-4 opening set loss to take set two 7-5 and force the tiebreaker. Caffarena battled, but fell just short in the final set, losing 5-7.
The Mavericks will return to Arlington next weekend as they take on Georgia State (March 25) and Georgia Southern (March 27) for Senior Day at the UTA Tennis Center. They will play Georgia State at 1 p.m., while Senior Day against Georgia Southern will begin at 12 p.m.
